Parton collection, 1942-1956.

A collection consisting primarily of materials gathered by Parton as an historian with an assortment of official documents and photographs which portray the World War II missions of the 8th and 12th Air Forces. Documents include correspondence between Generals Eisenhower and Spaatz and Air Vice Marshal Coninghan discussing the invasion of North Africa. The photographs include prints of types of aircraft, bombing sites in Italy, the Ploiești oil refinery, and the Battle of Cassino, Italy. Also included is historical data regarding the Fourth Fighter Wing, Chitose Air Base, Hokkaido, Japan from 1950-1956.

0 James Parton was pursuing his career in journalism until his commission in the U. S. Army Air Force in 1942. In 1943, he served as Aide to General Ira Eaker and later was the historian for the Eighth Air Force. Rising through the ranks in World War II to Lieutenant Colonel, Parton compiled historical data throughout the duration of his military career. At the end of the War, he resumed his journalistic career and, in 1954, he and some associates created the American Heritage Publishing Company...
